5 Tips for Driving Safely with Pets

A dog is an extension of the family and deserves to be a part of your upcoming summer road trip. However, traveling with a canine friend can have its challenges. Here are some Volkswagen accessories and tips on commuting with a pet in tow.

Normalize Car Trips

Pets can become restless and agitated on long trips. Get your pet acclimated by bringing it along on shorter road trips and slowly extending the commuting duration. This way, the pet can get acquainted with being inside a moving vehicle and the sights and smells they’ll encounter along the way.

Make Use of Volkswagen OEM Accessories

There are several VW pet accessories designed for traveling with a pet. Most of these accessories are optional. However, at a minimum, you should have a divider to prevent your pet from entering the driver’s side. Other useful accessories include:

  • Pet seat covers
  • Pet door guards
  • Rear seat pet hammocks

Take Your Dog for a Walk

Taking your dog for a walk an hour or so before the trip is recommended. This way, your dog has gotten its energy and outdoor fix by the time it enters the vehicle. It will be more relaxed and less inclined to move about in the cabin.

Dog Identification

Give your dog an ID tag with your address and phone number. It’s possible your dog can run away or get lost at your trip destination. An ID tag on its collar ensures that someone who finds the pet can contact you.

Pack For Your Trip

You’re not the only one who’ll want a snack and some water along the way. Make sure to pack extras for your furry friend, and make sure she gets a chance to stretch her legs along the way, too!
