Strong Volkswagen Tip: How to Use the LATCH System

Safety is naturally of the utmost concern for parents when bringing a baby or toddler along for a road trip. The Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system aims to keep the child seat secure, especially in the event of a collision. Our Strong Volkswagen tip of the day explains how to use this all-important harness.

Before Using LATCH

The Latch system may vary slightly between Volkswagen models, so always read the user manual for specific instructions. Also, keep in mind that the LATCH system has a weight limit. Be sure to know the weight capacity for your model’s LATCH system and the baby seat model.

Step-by-step Instructions for LATCH Use

  1. Locate the connectors and anchors, usually found on the second-row seats. The anchors will be imprinted with an icon of a child in a car seat. They’re typically located in the crack between the seat's lower section and the backrest.
  2. Attach the connectors to the anchor. The anchors should be horizontal with no twists in the straps.
  3. Locate the top tether. This is the strap located behind the seat that goes over the seat. Connect the tether to the top-tether anchor.
  4. Once the harnesses and tethers are attached to the anchor, test the child seat by moving it with your hands. As a general rule, if you can move the seat more than one inch in either direction, then it requires further tightening.
