Volkswagen Service Tips: Jump-Starting a Car Battery

When it comes to car ownership, there are few things more frustrating than hitting your Volkswagen car’s ignition and hearing the dreaded click of a dead battery. But before you call our VW service center at Strong Volkswagen, it is possible to jump-start your car battery in a few steps.

The 10-Step Process

When you need to jump start a battery, find a friend or family member with a car with a working battery. Remember, if you are uncomfortable with the following 10-step process or do not have jumper cables or a working car battery, the team at Strong Volkswagen is happy to tow you to our service center.

1. Park the vehicle with the good battery in front of the one that requires a jump-start. Turn off the ignition on both cars.

2. Open the hoods on both cars, and locate the batteries, removing the hoods covering the battery terminals, if applicable.

3. Find the negative and positive terminals and connect the jumper cables. First, attach a red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.

4. Attach the red clamp from the other end of the cables to the positive terminal on the booster battery.

5. Attach the black clamp to the negative terminal on the booster battery.

6. Attach the black clamp to an unpainted metal part on the engine of the car with the dead battery. You can use a bolt or bracket, but most Volkswagen cars have a grounding bolt marked with a negative sign for this purpose.

7. Start the engine of the booster car.

8. Attempt to start the engine of the car with a dead battery.

9. Disconnect the cables in reverse order.

10. Drive for at least 20 minutes, which allows the alternator to charge the battery.
